Traditional Willow Craft, Designed for Contemporary Spaces
I'm Hannah, the artist and maker behind Hanmade Willow Studio.
Based beside the River Ely in the Vale of Glamorgan, I combine traditional willow weaving techniques with contemporary design to create bespoke pieces that respond to their surroundings.
Every commission is developed around the client's requirements, the character of the site and the practical demands of the finished piece.
I work collaboratively from initial ideas and drawings through to material selection, handweaving and installation.
Choosing the Right Willow for Your Project
Different projects require different approaches. I work with dried willow, green willow, thicker willow sticks and living willow depending on the design, location and intended lifespan of the structure.
Living willow can root and continue growing, creating a changing, living structure that requires seasonal pruning and weaving. Dried willow provides a more permanent sculptural form and allows the weave and shape to remain visible throughout the year.
For larger structures, willow can also be incorporated around structural frameworks where additional strength or stability is required.
Hannah created the most beautiful sculpture for the winter light trail in Cardiff, Christmas at Bute Park. As an artist she is brilliant to work with from conception through to delivery. I couldn’t recommend her more highly.
